Sustainable Transport

Transport is responsible for about one-quarter of greenhouse gas emissions globally. Substituting petrochemical fuels with low-carbon fuels and electricity is urgently necessary to reduce anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. While multiple options exist and have varying degrees of maturity, their cost is often much higher than with current petrochemical fuels, resulting in a lower decarbonization pace than what needed. Policies are thus needed to buy down their costs and thus enable scale-up.

The CP lab’s research in sustainable transport aims to provide a deeper understanding of technological and policy options to drive transformative change towards a climate-neutral transportation sector.

Our research currently covers the following areas:

  • Sociotechnical assessments of future emerging transport technologies
  • Environmental and techno-economic assessments of fuels and construction materials
  • Policy pathways to catalyse and enable the transition to sustainable transport
  • Electrification of road transport and phase out of internal combustion engines
  • Alternatives (biofuels, CO2-based fuels, offsetting via carbon removal) for aviation and shipping
  • Power-to-X technologies
  • Well-to-wheels methodology
